How We're Different
When you live in a “castle” and enjoy the strong support of township government and the solid backing of residents, your outlook on the world is very positive. Since its founding in 1963, the West Orange First Aid Squad has been unique among area squads. After all, what other squad can boast not one, but two, NASA astronauts (Scott and Mark Kelly) among its alumni? WOFAS is a busy squad, handling almost 4,000 medical emergencies a year and with that kind of volume, members are highly experienced. And, they have the best equipment and vehicles to work with including four state-of-the-art ambulances, one of which is 4-wheel drive. In addition, a GMC 4-wheel drive Yukon has been fitted as a command car, capable of reaching patients off-road and carrying a boarded patient to a waiting ambulance. Two other cars complete the WOFAS fleet, ready to carry members to off-site training or to region-wide emergencies. WOFAS has recently been designated as a NJ certified training center and will be able to offer a full range of basic and specialized E.M.T. courses. As part of its extensive community outreach program, the squad hosts a monthly blood drive along with CPR courses for residents and professional rescuers. A recent CPR Day drew 67 town residents for American Heart Association training. The squad’s ranks always contains at least a dozen CPR instructors. The true WOFAS difference goes beyond the number of calls and beyond equipment. It’s more than the training and the individual commitment of each member. It is the intangible spirit of teamwork that infuses the organization, and draws its members and crews together into a cohesive whole. Each WOFAS member is aware of the difference he or she can make on any call. Have you ever saved a life? We have.
